What Do the Garage Door Springs Do?

Garage doors, some of which weigh hundreds of pounds, are simply too heavy to lift on your own. That’s why they come with springs. These are responsible for bearing the weight of the door. Without them, getting your equipment to work would be difficult to impossible.

There are two types: extension and torsion. Extension springs are the older variety and lift the door via a system of counterbalance cables and pulleys. When you hit the opener, the springs contract, allowing movement.

Torsion springs, on the other hand, unwind slowly as the door lifts. Instead of using pulleys and cables, the stored tension does all the work by turning a shaft, which then moves the cable drums. These provide better balancing than extension springs do.

Your system opens extremely slowly. It’s normal for it to open slowly at first, then speed up as the springs kick into gear. But if yours moves sluggishly throughout the entire process, something is likely wrong.
The structure opens partially and then stops. This can happen when the emergency shutoff system detects a problem with parts of the equipment.
You spot a gap between the coils of the spring. A gap like this occurs because the equipment can’t wind properly. You may still be able to get the door open, but we don’t recommend it. The motor will have to work harder, which could cause it to burn out. Additionally, the cables may become detached from the drum.
The top of your equipment is bent or crooked. This can happen if only one spring is broken. The good spring will continue trying to get things open, even though the other one can’t do its job, resulting in bending.
The structure jerks suddenly or falls without warning. This commonly occurs when you’re dealing with broken springs.
You hear a loud bang when operating the system. What you’re hearing may be the sound of the spring snapping.

Miguel and Andrew came to our house at 9:30 and were done by 5pm. The new doors look fantastic. They function well and are a lot quieter than our old doors. Our garage spring broke off last night, and I called RW right away since they replaced our motor back in 2020. They sent Ben Hughes to fix the garage door today. Ben was knowledgeable and recommended all necessary maintenance including replacing our worn out and torn rollers and brackets. He informed us that if we decide to update our garage door altogether that all parts and materials done will be deducted. He gave us estimates of all options for a new garage door. He was on time and timely in fixing our garage door, professional and friendly. Hopefully if we decide to get a new garage door, we would get Ben to replaced it.

Dustin arrived at 8:00 am on Monday morning ready to go. I appreciated that because so many companies insist on providing “windows” of time that they may arrive to perform their service and then frequently show up late and we’ll outside of that window. Dustin was quick, quiet and very efficient and the work he did installing our new garage doors was thoroughly professional. He covered all the things we would need to know about programming, operation and maintenance of the doors and my wife and I were very pleased with the installation, operation and especially the appearance of the finished product. Right Way Garage Door installer Devin was very helpful. He looked over my issues and gave me three options to repair my garage door. He did not pressure me into buying something that I didn't need but gave me great input into how to correctly repair my system. With-in 1.5 hrs he had my door working, old system removed, new system installed, all trash picked up and removed. Same day sales and installation was great.

Trent and Travis were so fabulous! They are kind, fun, caring and really good communicators. They also did such an awesome job of installing, letting me know my choices I didn’t know I’d need to make before things got done so I would have what I wanted, and cleaned up thoroughly. I asked them for business cards because I know my neighbors are going to want to copy what I did! My doors are stunning! People kept driving by to ask questions - they’re show stopping AND work So beautifully! Can’t say enough… (windows will be revealed once my painter paints them - made it easier for him and will save time and money to leave tape in place).

Carlos has integrity. I informed him that I didn't care if he wore his mask. He insisted he did because if company policy! Also, he did a perfect install and great job in clean up!! My insulated door was installed quick and works perfect. Thank-you to Benjamin for coming out ahead of time and shutting my old door that broke and fell off the track. RW doors installed my original door in 2002. Lasted 20 years!!!
