Santa Clara’s roots run as deep as those of any California town. Spanish settlers arrived in the latter half of the 18th century and founded the eighth-oldest Mission in California. Santa Clara University, California’s oldest institution of higher learning established in 1851 remains a centerpiece of the town that bears its name.
